The painted towns of Shekhavati were a chance discovery, just a couple of decades ago when two visitors were wandering around Rajasthan. Ever since tourists in great numbers have been flocking to these Rajasthani towns which lay along the caravan routes which fed the world-renowned Silk Route all the way down to the ports of Gujarat. When the British set up the railways in India and made the ports of Kolkata and Madras the big trading hubs, the merchant princes (seths) of Shekhawati were forced to move their businesses there too. But when the seths returned home laden with fresh riches they commissioned elaborate murals to be painted upon the walls of their homes to showcase the India of the British they had been exposed to.
