The state of Meghalaya is situated in the north-east region of India. The name means "the abode of clouds" in Sanskrit. The climate of Meghalaya varies with the altitude. The climate of Khasi and Jaintia Hills is uniquely pleasant and bracing. It is neither too warm in summer nor too cold in winter, but over the plains of Garo Hills, the climate is warm and humid, except in winter. Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya and the largest city. The capital city has a bracing climate throughout the year. This city has been the seat of Government since the consolidation of the British administration in this part of India more than a century ago. The place, the people, the flora and fauna and the climate all combine to make Shillong an ideal place throughout the year. The city is well connected with motorable roads all-over, has its own charm, different from other hill stations, and presents a natural scenic beauty with waterfalls, brooks, pine grooves and gardens. Meghalaya's main ethnic communities, each having its own distinctive customs and cultural traditions are the Khasis (of Mon-Khmer ancestry), the Garos (of Tibeto-Burman origin) and the Jaintias said to be from South East Asia. The State enjoys a temperate climate. It is directly influenced by the South-West Monsoon and the northeast winter wind. The four seasons of Meghalaya are: Spring - March and April, summer (Monsoon) - May to September, autumn - October and November and winter - December to February. Apart from Shillong, Cherrapunji is the place tourist prefer to visit and it is the wettest place on earth. Cherrapunji is lush green with waterfalls and an extensive underground caves. Jowai, the second biggest city in Meghalaya, is situated in the district of Jaintias. It is the gateway to Nartiang, a delightful village further north that has a bizarre collection of druid stones.
