Said to be amongst the first of the 12 hallowed jyotirlinga shrines of the Hindu faith the Somnath Temple is a living legend for its great significance to the stream of devotees down the centuries. The temple has a long history of being reconstructed over time, but it was the raider Mahmud of Ghazni who is most closely associated with its destruction. Attracted by legends of its enormous wealth,  he destroyed the lingam and escaped with  a booty of 20 million dinars. Legend has it that the temple was destroyed 17 times but was rebuilt each time by the people. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was instrumental in the construction of the temple you see today
